If is a tiny word, but it can have big implications.
We can use if to make excuses: I would exercise more often if …
We can use if to blame others: If only my brother hadn’t crushed my spirit by telling me how worthless I was…
We can use if to worry about things that may never happen: What if I show my work to someone and they hate it, or they rip it to shreds, or they tell me I don’t have talent …
But what if …
we used if to think and act in positive ways?
- What if I smiled at everyone I meet today?
- What if I said thank you to everyone who serves or helps me?
- What if I can make someone’s day by saying something kind?
- What if I laughed more?
- What if I changed up my routine?
- What if I read more and watched TV less?
- What if I refused to check my phone while conversing with family members?
- What if a paycheck doesn’t define my value?
- What if I thanked my spouse for all he or she does for me?
- What if I made that phone call I’ve been avoiding?
- What if I invited people over even when my house wasn’t perfect?
- What if I said Yes instead of giving in to fear?
- What if I said No instead of giving in to guilt?
- What if I dropped in on a friend or neighbor?
- What if I sent someone a cheery card?
- What if I sent an encouraging text to someone I haven’t talked to lately?
- What if I stopped worrying about what other people think and sang out loud?
- What if I took my passions and talents seriously?
- What if others do like my art?
- What if my words, or music, or act of service made a difference in someone’s life?
- What if I chose to risk instead of playing it safe?
- What if I believed failure was not the end of the world?
- What if I got back on my feet and tried again?
- What if I believed it’s OK to not be perfect?
- What if I focus on the things I am thankful for, instead of the things that frustrate me?
- What if I stopped expecting others to satisfy the needs that only God can fill?
- What if I ignored the little voice that says I can’t and tried anyway?
If we filled our days with these kind of What Ifs…
I think the world would be a better place, don’t you?
I you agree, share this post with your friends. Who knows who might need an encouraging What If today.

Thanks. Our pastor has been doing a series on what ifs, so I thought I’d think up a few of my own.
