Last Friday I had lunch with my son. (The one who lives at the other end of the state.) I could have focused our celebration on the fact that he’d just had a birthday. Birthday’s are sufficient reasons to celebrate.
But minutes before we met for lunch, my son accomplished a milestone—he had just attended his very last grad school class. He still has finals to take. He still has a whole year of clinical internship before he graduates. His final Last Day Of Class is only one little milestone in the big scheme of grad school.
But it was definitely worth celebrating! (After all, he’s been going to school for nineteen years. That’s a lot of classes.)
Within the next month, son number two will be celebrating his last Last Day Of Class as well. He and his classmates have been reaching little last of milestones all semester. And after graduation, as they move on and begin their careers, they will be facing many firsts.
Sometimes firsts should be celebrated too.
Why don’t we take more time to notice the little milestones?
I don’t know about you, but I am often guilty of ignoring the milestones that blip past on my journey to The Final Destination. That’s a habit I would like to change, because celebrating the everyday accomplishments makes life richer.
Three reasons to celebrate little milestones
- It motivates us to keep going. When we recognize the small accomplishments we make along the way, we feel successful. This is especially important when the going has been tough, or the end goal is still far out of reach.
- It promotes gratitude. When we stop to notice the small achievements, we find reasons to be grateful. And gratitude is good for us.
- It provides an opportunity for review. Paying attention to the steps along the way enables us to see how far we’ve come. It also gives us a better understanding of where we truly stand, which in turn helps us move forward with confidence.
Little milestones are all around us. Can you see them?
